Don't save Opera UserJS as UTF-8

Note to self: see title. For some reason — and this may just be my install, which has suffered any number of oddities and is still running the same grotty profile as when I first installed Opera — saving as UTF-8 causes the script to be run on all domains, regardless of the script's header. Re-save the unchanged script as ANSI and it works as intended.

I've been trying to trace this one back since last night. As I type this, it's now 4:04 PM the next day. (Heh, 404.) What the hell, Opera? You're usually so well-behaved. This may be a vagary of my install, yes, but it may not, and it's been terrible to trace.

I have no idea why this happens and I no longer care. After all that frustration, I'm just glad to have my scripts working correctly again. (I have a tendency to save things as UTF-8 in case I've slipped some Spanish in, as happens in some of my fiction involving an Egyptian-Spanish-American.) I've saved a note to myself in my UserJS as well.

Weird. But how cool do I feel now that I've figured out how to fix it? Oh yeah. I am awesome. Queen of my computer.

Life is good.

Universal Edit Button for Opera

I've been spotted; rather, something I created has. My first instinct is to squeak and find a dark hidey-hole. I'm grown-up like that.

Back when Roy added Universal Edit Button support on Tabulas, I felt an initial sting: something else specific to Firefox, which I, as an Opera user, could not use.

Then I straightened up and began working on making Opera do the same thing anyway. There's nothing browser-specific about a rel-link. It's just a matter of exposing that information to the browser, which can be done using any of a multiplicity of methods.

I'm still not certain I like using the address bar in quite this way, but my options are limited. Opera doesn't allow user scripts (or CSS or widgets) to affect the browser chrome. If the UEB ever moves to rel="edit" instead, as their wiki suggests is the plan, then I'll just add an "Edit" button to the toolbar with the rest of my rel-links. (Actually I've already added it, but even sites that have UEB support don't seem to have switched to the rel-link format yet).

new LiveJournal security options

Roy may call this feature mischief, but I deem it account security. LiveJournal has been having problems with fraudulent links used to hijack accounts. They've recently added some security settings that anyone with an LJ account should look into ASAP. (Judging by that post's comments, TinyURL seems to be the main URL shortener/masker.)

Thanks to Roy and his "mischief," that type of hijacking won't work on Tabulas. Thanks, Roy.

video game inventory

While browsing an online database of video games, I came across a member whose screenname I recognised from another site. Hmm, there's a list of video games he owns. How many — forty-nine?!

I don't own nearly forty-nine games. I only have about eighteen for my NES alone, and ... well, how many games do I have among all my systems?

I maintain a digital inventory of all my gaming items (nerrrrd!), so I opened it up and began counting game titles.

I stopped counting at fifty-six.

I win. I really need to stop underestimating my geek cred.

EDIT: I forgot my computer games, so make that sixty-two. My brother, just to show me up, counted his collection at sixty-eight!

Mr. Saturn datebook

I came, I saw, I made. I've wanted some small Mr. Saturn merchandise for some time now; this is perfect for me.

Also dude I have a camera and a Flickr account. Did you know that? Because I pretty much forgot about 'em.

I can haz EarthBound yey

I logged into eBay on St. Patrick's Day and found a that-day-only 10% coupon. Long story short, I now own and just thinking about it makes me bounce in my desk chair because this is awesome!

This one game probably cost more than I paid for all my other SNES games combined -- look upon these prices, ye gamers, and despair! (Bonus points to anybody who can name the poem I just riffed on.) Between the coupon and my obsessive, penny-pinching eBay trawls, though, I got what I consider a pretty good deal. No "new in box with manual and scratch 'n' sniff stickers" set for me. Just the cart, baby, that's all I need and this is awesome!

I swear I'm gonna cut down on the game-related chatter. It's not going away completely because of course I'm busy playing EarthBound and this is awesome!

Upon reflection, I don't think I need more caffeine today. Who knows what they put in that stuff?
